Hot Yoga Quad Cities FAQ image

What is yoga?

FAQ divider

Yoga means union of body, mind and spirit. Asanas (yoga postures) as practiced at our studio are the perfect lifetime fitness program and totally different from any other kind of exercise. Hot Yoga works by a tourniquet effect: stretching, balancing, and creating pressure all at the same time. The blood supply in arteries and veins is being cut off, creating pressure. When released, a lock gate effect is created, causing blood to rush through the veins and arteries, flushing them out.

Why do hot yoga?

FAQ divider

Hot yoga benefits your body because it assists your body in sweating out toxins while allowing you the practitioner to safely come deeper into a posture and stretch. By performing hot yoga you engage your body in focused deep breathing using heat to sweat out and detoxify impurities from the body. The direct result is the removal of anxiety, toxins and the additional benefit of weight loss. A regular practice can shed inches of fat, develop muscle tone and increase strength. In addition, the mental determination to work through asanas and heat builds perseverance, stamina, and endurance.

Focus on yourself and be still in between postures. Try not to be distracted by your sweat; it is after all hot yoga! Relax, and let the sweat roll off. Extra movements in the room waste energy and take you from your practice.

Do you have a separate class for beginners?

FAQ divider

No, history shows it is not necessary! Classes are suited for all levels, beginners and advanced alike. A classroom setting also allows you to set a level of intensity that is right for you.

Students are encouraged to say in the room the entire time. Both beginners and advanced practitioners alike must honor the body where it is. Every day is different. Take breaks as needed by lying down completely on the mat. Continue your practice when you feel ready.

What if I’m not flexible?

FAQ divider

Have no fear!! This is a common misconception that prevents people from coming to yoga class. Yoga is not about how flexible you are, it is about stretching your body and spine. The most important part of yoga is that you try and take your body to your unique physical limits. Like any other form of movement, you will gradually build the strength and flexibility required to do the poses.

I’m trying to lose weight, tone my body, or improve condition- Is hot yoga right for me?

FAQ divider

Yes. To put it simply, Hot Yoga is a great workout. The postures in the class require strength and balance, which means as you attempt them you will be working virtually every major muscle group in the body. While there are periods of rest, the poses are done one after another, which makes them an excellent cardiovascular workout as well. You will be able to burn calories at a similar rate to riding an exercise bike. We are constantly told by experienced athletes that yoga is an extremely effective workout by itself and in addition to any other form of physical activity.

How do I stay hydrated?

FAQ divider

Hydration is a combination of water intake and sufficient electrolytes in the body. Drink at least 2.5 liters of water a day in addition to replacing the water you lose in class. Sweating in class causes small amounts of electrolyte loss in the body that also need replaced. Electrolyte loss is greater in beginners and will lessen the more acclimated to the heat you become. If you notice you fatigue easily, have dull headaches, and or muscle cramping consider taking an electrolyte supplement. Coconut water is a great option and can be purchased at Hot Yoga Quad Cities.

Be hydrated BEFORE class; water intake while in the room will not catch you up. Wiping sweat greatly increases your water loss; when you wipe you simply sweat more. Do your best not to be distracted by your sweat.
